Why Should I Jump My Rabbit?
When we commit to the ownership of a rabbit, it brings with it a number of responsibilities which we are required to meet legally. In 2006 the Animal Welfare Act was amended to incorporate THE FIVE FREEDOMS. The incentive was to improve the quality of life for all domestic animals and ensure that there were clear, defined guidelines for owners to adhere to. Domestic animals should be able to live in an environment that matches the natural habitat of the species as closely as possible. Rabbits are highly intelligent and inquisitive. With this in mind it is very easy to see how they could become bored, depressed and in turn ill. A happy rabbit is a healthy rabbit.
So as rabbit owners we should be looking at the possible ways that we can add enrichment into our rabbits lives so that they can live to be fulfilled and healthy.
Jumping offers an alternative and safe option of enhancement for your rabbit. Training requires trust and this alone will serve to strengthen the bond between rabbit and owner. Only rabbits that are interested in jumping will partake, this ensures that all participants are doing what they enjoy to do. Training sessions are a good opportunity for a health check which will ensure that any abnormalities will be noticed early and dealt with accordingly.
Jumping allows a rabbit to exhibit natural behavior, rabbits that are happy are often noted to carry out a series of jumps and twists known as 'binky's'.
Jumping will provide a healthy rabbit with adequate exercise.
Jumping is an enjoyable way for both rabbit and owner to spend quality time together. The rabbit benefits by having the full attention of the owner and the owner benefits by having an insight into their rabbits personality that would otherwise be suppressed.
This is an opportunity that should be offered to any rabbit that is a suitable candidate.
